Last night’s election in Canada shows political élites are out of touch with the people I have more faith in the people than in politicians… Jack Layton proposed re-examining the Constitution, to bring Quebec on board, but there is little chance of this succeeding. I have more faith in the people of Canada (which includes Quebec) than I do in our politicians and bureaucrats. Compared to the ongoing nightmare of Lebanon, Canada is a country where nothing happens, and that is a very good thing. I am of English, Scottish, Québécois, Acadian, Narragansett and Wampanoag origin. And so much the better! As long as we don’t know for sure why the Deepwater Horizon occurred, as long as the ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico continues to spin out of control, it doesn’t make any sense at all to push ahead with development of the Old Harry field in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We need a full public inquiry in Canada about offshore drilling. There are more slaves now than at any previous period in history. Slavery is a global industry generating $91 billion in annual revenues. Our society is incredibly indulgent toward drunks. This is reflected in the way society’s definition of moderate consumption of alcohol depends on the circumstances. Biologist Richard Spears explains to George Tombs why humpbacks whales may be replacing blue whales in Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence |
