Adrien de Gerlache, The First Winter in Antarctica

Adrien de Gerlache (1866-1934) was a Belgian aristocrat, master mariner and commander of an international scientific expedition in 1897-1899 – the first-ever to overwinter in Antarctica. In this beautifully-written work, Gerlache describes the challenges, hopes and fears of life on board the Belgica, as his officers and crew struggle with extreme cold, depression, scurvy and death on their quest of the unknown.
