Rhythms of the River

Rhythms of the River

I was struck, in taking the ferry from Quebec City to Lévis last evening, how life has a different pace here.

We are far from the bustle of Montreal and other large North American cities, where the swelling tide of faceless humanity surges along – you almost never see the same people twice as you make your way along sidewalks, thoroughfares and other public spaces. In Montreal, young families seem like islets of love and intimacy and identity.

I like waiting for the next ferry here, then as I board the ship I like watching how the light and water change continually.

Even though it is an island-city, Montreal has lost contact with the river, whereas Quebec and Lévis are twin cities defined by the rhythms of the St. Lawrence.
