Pacioli, Divine Proportion

In this 1506 treatise on mathematics and architecture, the Franciscan friar Luca Pacioli (1447-1517) explores the golden ratio – the perfect mathematical proportion found here and there throughout the universe. As Galileo would later put it, “mathematics is the language in which God has written the universe.” Renaissance figures like Pacioli believed mathematical investigation could enable them to penetrate the secrets of God’s mind. This edition of a work never previously translated into English includes reproductions of the original illustrations from 1506 by Pacioli’s friend and collaborator Leonardo da Vinci.
