When Beatrice Raffaeli’s husband dies of the plague in 1560, she goes to stay with her uncle, an artist and disciple of the late Leonardo da Vinci. Beatrice then embarks on a journey, crisscrossing Renaissance Italy and France in search of original testimony, documents, inventions and artworks revealing Leonardo’s true legacy. At a time of religious strife, political intrigue and social ferment, she confronts the limits society puts on her as a young woman. Along the way, she makes many astonishing discoveries.
