Bachstrom, Observations on Scurvy

This work by Johann Bachstrom (1686-1742) is the first European publication to have established scurvy primarily as a deficiency disease (due to the lack of fresh vegetables and fruit). But this work, never before translated from Latin into English, has remained virtually unknown in the English-speaking world. Bachstrom, an Enlightenment figure, scientist and Lutheran pastor from Poland who fearlessly defied social conventions and the “powers that be” throughout his life, was ultimately strangled to death on the orders of the Jesuits.
