Last night’s election in Canada shows political élites are out of touch with the people I have more faith in the people than in politicians… Jack Layton proposed re-examining the Constitution, to bring Quebec on board, but there is little chance of this succeeding. I sometimes wonder whether politicians in democracies have the good of the people at heart. Are they actually happy when the economy is buzzing, jobs are being created, inflation is down, and there are good prospects of growth? I have more faith in the people of Canada (which includes Quebec) than I do in our politicians and bureaucrats. Compared to the ongoing nightmare of Lebanon, Canada is a country where nothing happens, and that is a very good thing. What was Conrad Black’s claim to historical greatness? Of all Canada’s greatest robber barons, he was the one who got caught. A lot of people are wondering whether Conrad Black’s fraud conviction will be tossed out, or upheld. Judge Richard Posner’s ruling in 2008 may give us a clue… I wonder why, where and when Conrad Black lost touch with reality. Could he have been willing to leave his fate to a mere roll of the dice? Conrad Black bears fundamental responsibility for a much of what happened at Hollinger International. But that is on the moral plane. Justice is blind. We will have to wait and see how things go in the Appeals Court. |
